Bat bites can easily go unnoticed and looking for bites on your skin may not be entirely reliable. Bite wounds from a bat appear as a very small scratch less than a millimeter long.

Secondly, wherever you find bats, you’ll find bat guano (droppings). Besides making a mess, bat guano is also a breeding ground for the disease Histoplasmosis, which can be contracted by humans simply by breathing in the airborne fungal spores.

A Bat Exclusion, Step-By-Step
Step 1: We remove any bats from the living area. (Usually, can be done in under an hour or two.)
Step 2: The property is inspected and any gaps or openings are sealed.
Step 3 : “Bat Control Devices” are installed to allow the bats to leave, but not return.
Step 4: When the bats leave the “Bat Control Devices” are removed and the structure is inspected for gaps one final time. (Usually, it takes about 2-4 days for all the bats to leave. During the colder months, it could take longer since bats hibernate and are less active.)
Step 5: (Optional) Any bat guano (bat droppings) is safely removed so your family won’t run the risk of contracting Histoplasmosis.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bats And Bat Exclusion
Are the bats harmed in any way? – Everything is completely humane and no bats are harmed during the removal and exclusion process.
Will my family have to leave the house while you do it? No, you can remain in the property during the exclusion process
How long will it take before my home is completely bat-proof? – Getting the bats out is rather quick and won’t take long at all. The bats will leave the structure completely between 1 and 4 days.
Are there any chemicals involved? No. In fact, using pesticides against bats is illegal and can be counterproductive. Poisoning bats simply increase the likelihood that they will come in contact with you or your family.
What do the “Bat Control Devices” actually do? – They allow the bats to leave the structure, but not return. They are only temporary and will be removed when the bats are gone.
Is there anything I can do to get the bats out myself? It’s possible, but keeping them out is another story. In an effort to seal the bats out, people often unknowingly seel them IN.
Do moth balls really work to keep bats away? – In order to keep the bats away, the active ingredient in moth balls, naphthalene, must be used in such large quantities that it poses a significant health hazard to humans.
What about those ultrasonic devices sold for the purpose of keeping bats away? Do they work? – No. Bat Conservation International says, “Ultrasonic devices are ineffective against bats… Exclusion is the ONLY effective solution for permanently removing bats from buildings.”
What do I do if a bat attacks me? The best way to deal with this is through prevention. It is best if a bat never comes near you or your family.
Is it true that bats come out at night while everyone’s asleep? Yes, bats are nocturnal. Some people have been bitten by a bat in their sleep. Some even SLEPT THROUGH the bat bite! This is very dangerous because the person won’t know to take the necessary precautions. It is difficult to even see if a bat has bitten you. It looks like a small scratch. Bat bite wounds are less than a millimeter in length.
What happens to all the bats? The bat colony is set free. Once they realize they can’t get back into your home, they’ll go find another dwelling place. As part of our complete bat exclusion process, we suggest the use of bat houses to keep bats away from humans altogether. This process is what Bat Conservation International recommends most highly since it is both effective and humane. If they stay on the property, they’ll help out with insects.
